Gut feels for all the old foolish gets with their aged gregarious fuels, the frail transitioners, the failed transgressors, the foul-mouthed beauties still, the eternally restless fashionistas and the once doomed stylists, the feral poets with two good lines left in their pockets, the fucked up geeks, all money no charm, and all those other strivers and chancers who make up this city of ours, like the mouthy scaffolders, savaged dog walkers, fatberg deconstructionists, lonely librarians, battered care workers, ariel installers, pavement riders, harassed couriers, burned out nurses, sweat shop slaves, supermarket warehousemen, working early hours strip light shift, invisible chauffeurs watching pricks abuse privilege in rear view mirror, inviolable hi vis midnight street sweepers, watchers of CCTV, art galleristas, tired baristas, tireless graffiti artists, the eternal homeless, hostel reception staff, the hostile and harassed, resting actors, abandoned cats, slinking foxes, the old vanishing sparrows, the new flourishing parakeets all the strugglers and stragglers, the lost the lonely the losers, the lovers, foolish gets, gregarious fuels, I have only mad love and gut feels for you all.
lyrics
PIGEON GATHERINGS
We huddle on your rooftops
We mingle in your squares
We colonise your statues
We have been here for years
We compete with the gull and the fox
Over the meagre pickings of a takeaway box
The grease the bones the smears the lies
Then we just take to the skies
You call us rats with wings
But you don’t know a thing
Other preening birds can sing
Who cares
We congregate under railway arches
Or pair up on the new glass towers
Under energy intensity light
Sometimes we get to shit on your advertising hoardings
Fetid black dropping on bleached white smiles
Still it’s not the end of the world
We all know who is responsible for that
You call us rats with wings
But you don’t know a thing
Other preening birds can sing
Who cares
We serenade the bin men who clean your streets
And we see the invisibles still, tom o bedlam and all
We claw through your drains
Scratching for loose grain
Sometimes we get to fly
And then a Peregrine Falcon takes us out the sky
